It is time to celebrate ourselves and our "Ominess", (as Colbert would say).
I announce the First Ever "Omi Awards", to acknowledge those who have done outstanding work, developed a lifestyle, made a contribution, or developed a habit which demonstrates values and qualities we associate with Omi.
So send me your nominations. Create a category, pick a person, and tell me why you think that person deserves the honor. Entries should be in English, mostly, although poetry or music are acceptable.
Nominations are limited to family and significant others. You may nominate your siblings, your parents, your child, your relations, or yourself, as I don't care.
Award winners will be announced during Omi Bash 2010.
The award appearance is still under consideration. Figurines made out of marzipan have a popular appeal (as they go well with a nice cup of coffee).
Entries due by October 15. Offer void where prohibited. Your mileage may vary.
GET STARTED ALREADY! These people are not going to nominate themselves (or they just might, hmmmmm......)
Don't post them here, instead, e-mail your nominations to: LJKAISER@COMCAST.NET.
I would like to propose an Omiee award in the Human Jukebox category. This award would go to the person with the most extensive and original repertoire of timely and situation-appropriate show tunes, sing-alongs, waltzes, polkas, marches, hymns, and muzak standards.
ReplyDeleteThrough years of hard work and dedication at Senior Centers across South Florida (King’s Point to be specific), Omi has honed her skills as a “Human Juke Box” to the point that no request, no matter how outrageous or far-fetched, can stump her. Not willing to allow the show to stop there, Omi has now taken this unparalleled musical talent and has applied it to the everyday events, conversations and routines of her daily life. For example, simple introductions could result in a welcoming rendition of “Getting to Know You”, and a polite responsive smile may elicit from Omi a heart-warming “When You Are Smiling”. Should someone mention to Omi that a flight was crowded, that might very well bring out an expansive performance of “Don’t Fence Me In”. An off-hand comment request for a cold drink might could cause Omi to roll out a hearty “Beer Barrel Polka”. Greetings over breakfast have caused Omit to break-out into an eye-opening “Oh what a Beautiful Morning” and a sunny day could very well turn-into a rendition of “Nothing Could be Finer”. And still later in the day - should the dinnertime conversation turn philosophical - one can expect Omi’s contemplative interpretation of “Que Sera Sera” or “Oh Danny Boy”. A recounting of recent travels could lead to a recital of “Wenn I Ubers Bergli Fahr” or “I left My Heart In San Francisco”, as an inquiry as to how things are at home could quite possibly elicit a nostalgic “My Staedtele Belz” or “Deep in the Heart of Texas”, and should the conversation turns to religion, a punchy “Hava Nagila” or solemn “Jerushalyim Shel Sahaf” can be expected before the evening is over.
Therefore, the Omiee award in the Human Jukebox category should be presented to the individual, in the course of the Omi Bash Weekend, who can name the most original, situation-appropriate song that will describe that situation, conversation, event, meal, etc.
